ARE YOU A BRITISH CITIZEN LIVING IN ITALY?
ARE YOU REGISTERED TO VOTE?
HAVE YOU ORGANISED A PROXY VOTE?
BRITISH IN ITALY IS ENCOURAGING PEOPLE LIVING IN ITALY TO USE A PROXY VOTE TO VOTE FOR REMAIN PARTIES IN THE ELECTIONS ON 12 DECEMBER.
The upcoming UK general election on December 12th could be one of the most important and significant elections in modern times and therefore we would encourage all British citizens living in Italy to vote, where possible. However, in past elections thousands of Britons in the EU who relied on the postal vote failed to have their vote registered because of postal delays. For this reason many local authorities are recommending we vote by proxy rather than post, and British in Italy strongly endorses that recommendation.
In order to do this you will need to make sure you are on the electoral register and cancel your postal vote by 26 NOVEMBER. The deadline for setting up a proxy vote is the 4th December (as long as you are on the electoral roll by November 26th).
You can organize your proxy vote by filling in the form here:
FINDING AN ‘IN PERSON’ PROXY TO VOTE ON YOUR BEHALF
It is often the case that British citizens living abroad no longer have a connection to the last constituency in which they were registered to vote and therefore proxy voting is almost impossible if friends or family members are not available to act on your behalf.
A ‘remain’ alliance of concerned British citizens have aimed to remedy this situation by offering to find you a proxy in your last registered constituency. It is being organised through Facebook and we as are happy to report details of it to you as detailed below (if you are not a Facebook user, don’t despair, please keep on reading until the end):
1) JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP “REMAIN PROXY VOTERS”
This is a closed group set up by people active in the Remain campaign, for people both to offer and request a proxy voter. You complete a simple form, giving your name, your constituency and your postcode, and the group admins will match you up with members close to your polling station. You then make contact with your potential match and take things from there. A good few matches are being made every day and more people are joining all the time. Join the group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/RemainProxyVoters/
2. JOIN YOUR LOCAL “[your area] FOR EUROPE” GROUP ON FACEBOOK
There are many such groups, covering most of the UK – for example, Bristol for EU, Cardiff for Europe, Norwich and Norfolk for Europe etc. If you’re not a member of the one covering your constituency’s area, try doing a Facebook search using the name of your local area and “EU” or “Europe” to see what comes up, then join the group. Then put up a post in that group asking if anyone is close enough and willing to be your proxy. Pro-EU groups are only too willing to help out pro-EU overseas voters who want to vote tactically.
British in Italy is aware that not all our members are active Facebook users and so if you have any queries about how to find a proxy then please write to us at email@example.com and/or sign up to this newsletter at the link provided below.
